Julien DE SMEDT
Julien De Smedt’s commitment to exploring contemporary architecture has helped to re-energise the discussion of the practice with projects such as the VM Housing Complex, the Mountain Dwellings, the Shenzhen Logistic City and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. Prior to founding JDS Architects, he worked with OMA and Rem Koolhaas, Rotterdam, and co-founded and directed with Bjarke Ingels the PLOT architecture firm in Copenhagen.
The awards and recognitions De Smedt has received include the Henning Larsen Prize, an Eckersberg Medal and 2 MIPIM Awards. His Stavanger Concert Hall was named as the Worldʼs Best Concert Hall at the 2004 Venice Biennale, and the Maritime Youth House won the AR+D Award in London and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award during the same year. De Smedt has received the Maaskant Prize for Architecture and a WAN-World Architecture News “21 for 21” Award – Leading Architects of the 21st Century. He lectures and his work is exhibited worldwide, and he has been a visiting professor at Rice and Lexington University. Two monographs on JDS Architects – PIXL to XL and Agenda are distributed globally.
